Weird Science - Tales from the Vectrex Academy Lab

Vectrex Project Title

  • CUSTOM VERSION OF THE VECTREX ANALOG BOARD

Synopsis

  • The SCOPETREX is a modern replacement for the digital board of the Vectrex (also see here).
  • Here in this experiment we are trying to build a modern replica version of the analog board of the Vectrex.
  • I am currently tutoring a student who happens to have a very solid background in analog TV technology. He is also very interested in retro computers and retro computing.
  • He aided in repairing one of my Vectrex consoles and afterwards started experimenting with a SCOPETREX board connected to the original Vectrex CRT and analog board.
  • He then proposed to start working on creating his own "modern" version of the Vectrex analog board, and this here is what he has come up with so far.

Project Status

  • Ongoing
  • Successful first screen-test with a very early alpha-prototype

Picture Gallery

  • On the pictures you can see the current status of this project.
  • The only original Vectrex part used in the experiment is the Vectrex CRT.
  • The CRT is driven by a custom power source and an early prototype of the custom analog board (here still consisting of several separate boards).
  • The digital part is provided by the SCOPETREX board.
  • With this setup, Mine Storm can be seen running on the sreen.
  • The image is stable, but some details still need fine-tuning.
  • And yes, we are totally aware of the dangers of high CRT voltages.
